Remarkable’s tiny E Ink tablet wants to replace your old school notebook

I’ve always had the dream of ditching my paper notebook for a digital alternative, but it’s never really panned out because most of the options out there feel a bit too large or awkward for notetaking, whether it’s the Kobo Libra Colour or the Kindle Scribe. This is where Remarkable’s new pint-sized 7.3-inch color E Ink Paper Pro Move comes in, cutting a significant amount of screen real estate off last year’s 11.8-inch Remarkable Paper Pro.

The tablet measures in about the size of a paperback novel or notebook, making it much easier to slide into a pocket and hold with one hand (thanks to its 4.24-inch width), similar to the 6.1-inch Boox Palm 2, though that device doesn’t offer stylus support. Like reMarkable’s Paper Pro, the Paper Pro Move comes with the company’s eraser-equipped Marker pen, which magnetically charges on the tablet. Compared to the standard Paper Pro, the Pro Move comes with 64GB of internal storage and features a slower 1.7Ghz dual-core Cortex-A55 chip, alongside a smaller 2,334mAh battery that Remarkable says will last two weeks.

Regarding its display, the Paper Pro Move’s 7.3-inch Gallery 3 color E Ink panel is a cut above the E Ink Kaleido screens featured in Amazon’s Kindle Colorsoft and Kobo’s Libra Color in terms of vibrancy and vividness. However, its screen refresh rate is slower than both of those devices, according to The Verge, so the Paper Pro Move might feature a lot of ghosting, unfortunately.

It’s worth noting that the Paper Pro Move isn’t designed to be an e-reader. In fact, it doesn’t even have access to any online book stores, and its file support is limited to ePub and PDF files. Its sole purpose is notetaking, and because of this focus, it features a wide variety of templates, alongside the ability to convert handwritten notes to text (good luck understanding my awful writing, though).

This is the first E Ink device I’ve seen in the last few years that feels like it might have the potential to replace my trusty physical notebook. I like the fact that it’s smaller than most other E Ink tablets out there, and if its refresh rate ends up not being that bad, it could be a versatile platform for quickly jotting down notes and daily tasks.

The Paper Move is available now on Remarkable’s website starting at $450, which if you didn’t notice, isn’t half the price of the $630 Remarkable Pro despite the tablet being half the size.
